LEGISLATIVE REPORT

Joni Davis, Legislative Chair

Here is the update from our last meeting in Pierre. If questions, let me know and I can get back to you.

·          February- Legislative Days held in Pierre. The Healthy Children, Healthy Choices reception was not attended by any legislators. The banquet of the state municipalities that we tried to schedule around had been changed to a luncheon because of the legislators change to not working some Fridays.

·          The Grab and Go lunch in the president and speakers lobbies in the Capitol was very successful and much interaction with legislators.

·          March- SNA of SD delegation attended the Legislative Action Conference in Washington, DC. Connie Hlavac, Sandra Kangas and Joni Davis attended. They met with Erica Swisher from Senator Johnson’s office, Jane Tschetter from Representative Herseth-Sandlin’s office and Senator John Thune,

-The discussion points were the Nutrition Standards and Funding. With the reality that Nutrition Standards are coming, we shared concerns from South Dakota but did try to discuss how this would impact schools.

-Funding was a more difficult discussion as trying to prioritize were limited funding goes is what congress is up against. We did take the message that to continue to do what we are and make the required changes that are corning, it is going to take more reimbursement or revenue of some kind to school programs. The issue paper and talking points are included for review. Reauthorization of Child Nutrition program will be in 2009. This is where the issues of elimination of reduced price meals, Nutrition Standards and funding will happen now.

·          Thank you letters were sent to our congressional delegation for their time and that of their aides who met with us, Encouraged them to call us for any information they need.

·          April- review of bills in 2007.

·          Did get the expansion of the fresh fruit and vegetable Snack program. South Dakota had grants to request funding for an additional 25 schools.

·          May- The Legislative days for Pierre have been scheduled. They are Wednesday and Thursday, February 5 and 6 The President andSpeakers lobbies in the Capitol have been reserved from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.
